Indian cinema is being looked upon with importance by the world: Shah Rukh

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

After being introduced as the ‘King of Bollywood’ at the recently held ‘Golden Globe Awards’, Shah Rukh’s joy seems to have no bounds. The actor is not just ecstatic about AR Rahman’s victory but also charged up about the fact that India’s finally getting noticed abroad.

SRK, who graced the Golden Globe red carpet on Sunday, said in an interview to a news portal, “I am very honoured and at the same time I accept with full humility that I was not called because of who I am, but it was because Indian cinema is being looked upon with importance by the Western world now.”

When asked why he was chosen to represent Bollywood, the actor gushed humbly “I just happen to be one of the faces of Bollywood and so they chose me.”

According to him, Indian cinema has finally arrived and the way a film made entirely in India has been received by the western audience, it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the Golden Globe win is just a stepping stone for Indian cinema.

Guess it is time for Indian filmmakers to take a cue from meaningful cinema like ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and make hay while the sun is shining bright on India!

Indian films see steep fall in Pakistani audience post-Mumbai attacks

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Growing tension between India and Pakistan after the recent Mumbai terror attacks has adversely affected the business of Indian films in Pakistan,Cinema officials have revealed that the Pakistani cinema halls have seen a 75 percent reduction in attendance of Indian films after the attacks.

They said that a large chunk of Pakistani moviegoers had refused to watch Indian films in local cinemas, and the business had suffered due to the Mumbai carnage.

While the Indian films had been in high demand before the attack, cinema officials said that the trend had apparently changed due to the tensions between the two countries.

Plaza Cinema Manager Anwar said that though people did come to watch Indian films, but the number had reduced by 75 percent since the attacks.

He said that, currently, Indian films were being showcased in three mainstream cinemas- DHA Cinema, Plaza Cinema and Sozo World Cinema.

Anwar said that the Plaza Cinema, with a capacity of 850 people without any signs of congestion, used to witness a turnout of 250 people in every show and it has now reduced to 50.

He claimed that crowds did not throng the movie halls even on Sundays, which has made the business to suffer a serious setback.

He also said that such a trend would make cinema producers wary of purchasing the screening rights of upcoming Indian films.

Sozo World Cinema official Sharafat said that everyday the cinema had been screening two Indian films and they had failed to attract as many people as they previously used to. With a capacity of 400 people, the cinema had not been jam-packed ever since tensions developed between the two countries.

He also said that ‘Yuvvraaj’, a film featuring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, was currently airing in the city’s cinemas, but the film had failed to get a full house despite the great market value of the actors.

According to Pakistan Cinema Management Association (PCMA) Chairman Qaiser Sanaullah Khan, in the aftermath of a significant reduction in the demand of Indian films, exhibitors and distributor have not been too keen to purchase the screening rights of the new Indian movies.

He revealed that large media groups, which had earlier screened several Indian movies, have not come forward to purchase the screening rights of the latest Shahrukh Khan starrer ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’.

He feared removal of Indian films from local cinemas if tensions continue in the attendance of Indian films.

Single mums spend less time with their kids than married counterparts

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

A new study has found that single mothers spend less time with their children than married counterparts.Sarah Kendig and Suzanne Bianchi from University of Maryland examined differences in the amount and type of time that single, cohabiting, and married mothers spend with their children.

They found that cohabiting and married mothers spend similar amounts of time caring for their children, while single mothers spend less time with their children than married mothers.

However, if single mothers had the same level of education and employment as married mothers, they would spend the same amount of time with their children.

The reason why single mothers spend less time is they have higher employment rates - and employed mothers spend less time caring for their children than mothers who are not employed.

“This suggests that if we want to equalize maternal investments in time with children, we could do so by encouraging policies that focus on improving educational and employment opportunities for single mothers,” the authors conclude.

This study is published in the November 2008 issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family.

Nielsen finds strong TV-Internet usage overlap

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Nearly a third of all U.S. household Internet activity takes place while the user watches television, suggesting new and old media often share rather than compete for attention, the Nielsen Company said in a report on Friday. In fact, the study found that heavy Internet users are among the most dedicated of TV viewers, spending more than 250 minutes a day in front of the tube, compared with the 220 minutes of television watched by people who never go online.

The findings would appear to be good news for broadcasters who worry the Internet is siphoning away viewers, and with them advertising dollars. It also helps explain the apparent paradox between rising TV viewership overall and the growing popularity of new media.

“TV usage is at an all-time high, and yet there’s a lot more people using the Internet, and where does the time go, and part of the answer is that it’s happening simultaneously,” Nielsen spokesman Gary Holmes said.

The report, the first of its kind by Nielsen’s media measuring service, was based on a sample of 3,000 people in more than 1,000 households during the month of May.

The study did not differentiate among the types of Internet use engaged in by TV viewers, though the most popular online activity typically consists of Web searches, e-mail and other forms of text communication, as well as shopping, Holmes said.

Internet use overall is growing by leaps and bounds, up 9 percent year-to-year in May, he said.

But average TV viewership still dwarfs online activity in the home — 127 hours vs. 26 hours per month among those who use the Internet, with video “streaming” on the Web accounting for just two hours and 19 minutes. As a group, teen girls are the most likely to engage in streaming, 82 percent.

While 31 percent of in-home online activity occurs at the same time the user is watching TV, the lion’s share of all household TV viewership — almost 96 percent — takes place apart from the Internet, the Nielsen study found.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, a higher percentage of teenage TV viewing coincides with Internet use, 5.4 percent compared with 3.8 percent for the general population, Nielsen found.

Still to come is research that explores the correlation between TV and entertainment content on the Web, and the relationship between TV commercials and online advertising, Holmes said.

Bond set closed to find Craig’s finger pad

Monday, October 20th, 2008

The cast and crew of the new James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace” halted production during shooting to look for Daniel Craig’s finger pad after the actor injured himself while filming an action scene. The movie star had to have the end of his finger ‘cauterised’ when he ripped it off on a doorframe during a fight scene in the movie, reports contactmusic.com.

He now has a scab on his fingertip to remember the injury, but he insists it wasn’t as bad as the media suggested.

‘It wasn’t as extreme as all that…It hit the press, though, because I was taken to hospital. I was bleeding a lot. Filming stopped and everybody went, ‘Oh my God! He sliced the end of his finger off.’ They went looking for it but couldn’t find it,” Craig told Playboy magazine.

I have brain tumour, confirms golf legend Ballesteros

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros, a five-times major winner, said Sunday he has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

“I inform you that after an exhaustive check, that was realized at Hospital La Paz, a brain tumour has been detected,” the 51-year-old said in a statement issued by the Madrid hospital.

Ballesteros said he will undergo a biopsy on Tuesday and then doctors would decide on a course of treatment.

“During my career I was one of the best at getting around obstacles on golf courses. Now I want to be the best at confronting the most difficult match of my life with all my strength, and counting on all of you who are sending encouraging messages,” he said.

“I have always felt very close to people who suffer serious illness, even more severe than mine. I want to remind them that with courage, faith, serenity, confidence and a lot of mental strength we have to face every situation no matter how difficult it is.

“I want to thank from the bottom of my heart all those people who have shown affection and interest in my state of health, with all kinds of support.”

His close friend, and Spanish compatriot, Jose Maria Olazabal said he had visited Ballesteros in hospital.

“I saw Seve looking very well. We were speaking for quite a little while. I wish him a prompt recovery,” said Olazabal.

Ballesteros collapsed unconscious on Monday and was taken to the hospital where he remained in intensive care while doctors conducted tests.

Hospital officials released a statement on Friday confirming the Spaniard had suffered “a partial epileptic fit” but said he had left intensive care and was in “a stable condition.”

He posted a reassuring message on his personal website during the week, saying he was “feeling very well” as he waited for the results of clinical tests.

In his latest statement, Ballesteros said he had waited to make his brain tumour diagnosis public until he had first personally informed his three teenaged children, including two who were out of the country, and his ex-wife.

His family flew to Madrid this weekend to be by his side, Spanish media reported.

He thanked well-wishers for their support, asked that his family’s privacy be respected and vowed to provide updates on his condition.

Last year doctors discovered he was suffering from an irregular heartbeat, a condition which his manager said at the time was not serious.

Ballesteros won the British Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 and became the first European to win the Augusta Masters in 1980, a title he repeated in 1983.

He was an influential figure in the Ryder Cup, winning 20 points from 37 matches and captaining Europe to victory at Valderrama in 1997.

He collected 87 titles before knee and back problems forced him to retire last year.

Known for his flamboyant and imaginative style of play, he won one of his three British Open titles by playing a shot from a temporary parking lot.
